You still can’t pay for Claude Pro with UPI โ but Claude can now pay for your lunch with it. That’s the confusing part most coverage glosses over. Anthropic shipped official rupee pricing for Claude subscriptions on July 13, 2026, but UPI, India’s most-used payment rail, still isn’t accepted for Pro, Max, or Team billing. How to Actually Pay for Claude Pro From India
The steps are the same as anywhere else Claude sells subscriptions directly โ there’s no separate India-specific signup flow:
- Log in to your Claude account at claude.ai.
- Click your name/initials in the lower-left corner and select Settings.
- Go to Billing and click Upgrade plan.
- Choose Get Pro plan, then pick monthly or annual billing.
- Enter payment details and confirm.
If you’re eligible for India’s rupee pricing, you’ll see the INR amount (โน2,399/month billed monthly, or an effective โน2,000/month billed annually) at checkout instead of a dollar figure. If you’re still seeing USD pricing, that’s a known rollout-lag issue, not an error on your end.

My take: the practical workaround for most people isn’t a workaround at all โ it’s app store billing. If your bank card keeps failing on claude.ai directly, subscribing through the iOS or Android app routes the charge through Apple or Google, which usually accepts UPI-linked and domestic cards at the store level even though Claude itself never touches UPI in that flow.
๐ฎ๐ณ If your card gets declined at checkout: the most common cause is international/foreign transactions being switched off by default on Indian debit cards. Call your bank or toggle it in your bank’s app before assuming the card itself doesn’t work.
The UPI Twist: Claude Can Use UPI โ Just Not to Pay Anthropic

That is real, working UPI integration involving Claude. It is not the same thing as being able to pay Anthropic for your Claude Pro subscription with UPI โ those are two entirely separate systems built for two entirely different purposes.

What we tested: we haven’t had pilot access to Agentic Payments ourselves โ it’s currently limited to a select group of users โ so we can’t verify the merchant-side experience firsthand. What’s clear from Razorpay’s own announcement is the mechanism: users approve a spending limit per merchant, and Claude executes transactions within that limit without repeated PIN entry. Worth treating as promising but unverified-by-us until it’s broadly available.

Several India tech blogs have run headlines implying Claude “now supports UPI in India” off the back of the Razorpay/NPCI news โ technically true for merchant payments, misleading if you’re trying to figure out how to pay your own Claude Pro bill.
Why Anthropic Hasn’t Added UPI for Subscriptions Yet
Anthropic hasn’t given an official reason. The honest answer is we don’t know, and any specific explanation would be speculation dressed up as reporting. What we can say: OpenAI has supported UPI billing for ChatGPT subscriptions in India since August 2025 โ nearly a year ahead of Claude’s INR pricing rollout, let alone UPI subscription support, which still doesn’t exist. Given that Anthropic already has a working UPI rail through the Razorpay/NPCI partnership for a different use case, the technical piece isn’t the blocker; it reads more like a sequencing choice than a capability gap.

If you’re trying to subscribe to Claude Pro from India today, use an international-capable credit or debit card, or subscribe through the iOS/Android app if your card keeps failing.
